EXERCISE IS WHERE YOU FIND IT!
One and a two. One and a two.
Remember when exercise was more than reaching for the remote?
One and a two. One and a two.
Or walking to the fridge during commercials.

Talk to your doctor, and then incorporate these exercise opportunities into your everyday activities!

Don't Take it Easy
Whenever possible,
1. Take the parking spot farthest from the door.
2. Carry your groceries to the car.

Walk the Walk
Mall walking is the latest in exercising. Enjoy the safe, temperature-controlled environment before the stores open.

GET OUT THE VOTE The power is yours!

VOTING AROUND THE WORLD
You only have to look at the voting lines in South Africa, the cue in Afghanistan, and the purple fingers in Iraq to realize how precious the right to vote is.

HERE AT HOME
Over the years, people have sacrificed their lives to preserve our right to vote. With this simple gesture we honor them.

THE “MY-VOTE-DOESN’T-COUNT” MYTH
Voting turn out in the United States is on the decline. However, the importance of each vote becomes evermore apparent with each close election. Here’s what you can do!

CHAT IT UP
Through the Internet, you can get out the vote! Email your friends, sharing your reasons the upcoming election is important.

USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM
If buddy system worked in kindergarten, it’ll work now! So, take a buddy to the booth. It’s an opportunity to reach out to your next door neighbor or a long lost friend. You can:

  • Meet your buddy for breakfast or dinner. Make an event out of the day!
    Can’t get together? Then
  • Send an email reminder.
  • Give your buddy a call.

The power is in your hands — on the phone, on a mouse and in the booth!

FEAR OF SURFING
Let FDR and Shakespeare Be Your Internet Guides

When it comes to the Internet, FDR was right: “You have nothing to fear but fear itself.” Fear of making a mistake, appearing foolish, or being confused stops many people from plunging into the surf. Well, fear no more! Below are web guidelines that will help you get your feet wet.

SURFING MEANS EXPLORING:
The Web is mistake proof, as long as you see surfing as an opportunity to explore. So, if you do not land on your intended site immediately, it’s okay! It’s a slight detour on your web excursion and may be quite “scenic.”

THE SYMBOLS
There are symbols on the menu bar of every web browser. Although they differ, they are well labeled and intended to guide you through the process. As you click, you’ll discover what the icon is designed to do. And remember, YOU CAN’T MAKE A MISTAKE!

SURFING A TOPIC USING KEYWORDS
What subjects are you interested in? Pick a topic, any topic and there is a web site about it!

Search: Don’t worry if you don’t remember what comes after “www” and before “.com.” Every web browser has a place where you can type “keywords” that describe what you’re looking for. Then click the “search” button. Voila! An array of choices featuring your keywords will be immediately available.

No match?: It’s possible that there are no matches. Don’t fret. You didn’t make a mistake! The computer program wants to help and will prompt you.

  • If there is a misspelling, the program will ask, “Do you mean___?” and suggest an alternate spelling
  • If your keyword is too general, the program requests that you refine your search. So try again!!!

CLICK AND SHOP:
Shakespeare was almost right… He should have said, “All the world’s a mall!” Especially on the Internet.

Safety, The Big Question: Is it safe? Will my personal, financial information be private?

Reputable on-line stores use encryption technologies that keep your personal and credit card information secure and unavailable to outsiders. Review the on-line store’s security policy prior to giving personal information, if you have any concerns. (For more information, check the Web Security sites listed below.)

When Am I in a Safe Area?

  1. Notices pop on the screen whenever you enter or leave an encrypted, secure area. Clicking on “ok” or “continue” indicates your desire to go to the next step.
  2. The “s” after “http” in the email address means the page is secure. Check the address after the pop-on screen warning to make sure the address reads: https:
  3. A closed lock icon in the corner of the screen indicates you are in a secure area.

Click Till You Drop… Or not. Just like any store, you may just browse.

Is It Hard? Not at all! Shopping at on-line stores is a user-friendly experience, because they want you to be a happy customer. The prompts that guide you through the process are like helpful sales personnel.

WEB SECURITY
Information: There are web sites that guide you through the maze of security issues that plague children and adults. Here are two for starters.

  1. Go to safekids.com for the information needed to keep children Internet savvy.
  2. Anthony’s got your back and answers to web-safety FAQs at atkielski.com/inlink.php?/main/ISeeYouFAQ.php, a homespun web site.

Use your keywords to find sites that can answer other questions you may have.

Software:

  1. For Purchase: The folks at your local computer can point you to the software that is appropriate for your computer and your needs.
  2. For Free: The recommended software may be free and down-load-able from the Internet itself.

As the saying goes: nothing ventured, nothing gained… SO, SURFS UP!!!!!!!!!!!
