It was Christmas 1999, a time of reflection and Dr. Alice Walker Duff needed presents for her family and friends. A newspaper article about favorite Christmas presents prompted the idea: give a box for keeping happy memories. Friends who received the first MAHALI™ boxes said, “You’ve got something here!”
“Timing is everything.”
The MAHALI™ idea coincided with a time when Dr. Duff was transitioning from Crystal Stairs, a non-profit agency she co-founded, to the next phase of her life. It was also time for Alice’s high school reunion, 2,500 miles away.
“You gotta have friends” with skills.
One of Alice’s classmates, Terry Ann Marek, owned Intermission, a gift shop in Philadelphia. Terry encouraged Alice and introduced her to retail specialists. The networking process was a testament to the MAHALI™ philosophy: relationships are important.
Alice’s best friend, her husband Joseph Duff, Esq., had faith that consumers would value family, friendship, genealogy, life transitions, and inter/intra-generation communications. They shared the vision and MAHALI™ was launched!
Alice assembled a talented team to create the MAHALI™ line of products. Their expertise ranged from product design to finance and marketing, from production to distribution.
